Curio + WCN Co-Host — 2017–2018
18,166 tweets · 7,064 originals · The peak influence years
This is the period when MadBitcoins becomes — by any honest measure — one of the most engaged-with voices in Bitcoin Twitter. Top originals don't just outperform earlier years, they eclipse them. Single tweets pulled hundreds of favs and hundreds of retweets. The audience grew, but more importantly the audience grew into the kind of audience that screenshots and quote-tweets.
Two structural things happen simultaneously: Curio Cards launches (May 2017) as the first NFT art project, and Hunt is now a regular WCN/TBG co-host. The Twitter account becomes the connective tissue between the daily show, the panel show, and the art project.
What he was talking about
- Venezuela hyperinflation as Bitcoin's case study. The era's top tweet — "The world has changed. #Bitcoin #Venezuela" with the CNBC piece (Aug 24, 2017) — landed 714 favs and 350 retweets. This isn't just news; it's a thesis statement.
- The SegWit / Coinbase pressure campaign. The "ATTENTION @Coinbase @brian_armstrong @bitpay @blockchain — Please announce your roadmap for #Segwit Adoption within 24 hours or we will be f[orced to..]" tweet (Dec 5, 2017) hit 196/90. MadBitcoins helped organize the public-pressure phase that ended with major wallets and exchanges activating SegWit.
- The BCH wars, refereed. "We are more like our fellow bitcoiners than anyone else. Why separate into two weaker groups when we can be one strong one? #unifyBitcoin" (Mar 2017). The "PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT — Please do not be 'incredibly rude' to @rogerkver. Do not call '#Bitcoin Cash' #Bcash" (Nov 2017, 229/61). Hunt deliberately played peacemaker in a famously bitter schism — and the receipts show people listened.
- Vegas dominance. Hunt becomes a Vegas resident, and the timeline is now full of "#bitcoin is just everywhere in #Vegas" (219/65), Bitcoin ATM spotting, conference logistics. Vegas isn't a topic; it's a beat.
- International scene reporting. "In Hungary like five minutes, already found the #bitcoin ATM" (177/35). MadBitcoins is now the de facto international correspondent.
- Blockchain skepticism that aged well. "the reason this won't work is because 'blockchain' is not a truth machine. If you put false data in, it puts false data out." (Apr 2018, 187/44). The unsexy, accurate take during peak "everything-on-blockchain" hype.
What landed
This is the era where one-line declarative tweets win. The format has shifted: less daily-show link-out, more direct opinion with a photo. Photographs of Vegas Bitcoin ATMs perform consistently. Brand-name callouts (Coinbase, BitPay, G20, CNBC) consistently outperform inside-baseball.
The single most distinctive new format that emerged: the all-caps PSA / ATTENTION tweet as a coordination device. It works because Hunt has the standing to use it without sounding entitled.
What flopped
Tweets that were too coded for non-Bitcoin people (deep technical SegWit details that don't include the receiver's name) underperformed their topical importance. Tweets that landed during peak news cycles outperformed even strong tweets posted off-peak.
Voice characteristics
The persona is now Thomas Hunt as MadBitcoins — the newscaster mask is more transparent. He'll tweet "this won't work" in his own voice, and the audience knows who's talking. The Vegas locale gives the account a setting. The Curio Cards project gives the account a project. The WCN/TBG roles give the account an institutional voice.
Top hashtags of the era anchor it: #bitcoin (the constant), #curiocards (the new art project), and a long tail of conferences and Vegas-specific tags. Mentions are heavy on the Bitcoin Core / industry orbit.
Series + recurring concepts
- #Segwit pressure campaign tweets — a multi-week cadence
- Vegas ATM photos — recurring genre
- TBG and WCN panel promos — predictable weekly rhythm
- The "PSA / ATTENTION" tweet — emerges as a format
Why the era matters
This is the moment when MadBitcoins moves from "well-known Bitcoin Twitter account" to "institution that other institutions respond to." When the account pressured Coinbase about SegWit, things changed. When it called for a less hostile BCH/BTC conversation, prominent people quoted it. When it endorsed an art project (its own — Curio Cards), that project went on to land at Christie's. The compound effect of years of trustworthy reporting paid off in this 2017–2018 stretch.
