Where the panel landed

After SegWit activated, was Bitcoin entering a new development phase, or merely moving from one scaling fight into the next custody, fork, and exchange crisis?

Jimmy Song and Tone Vays agreed that SegWit activation was important but not an instant finished product. Jimmy emphasized patience, infrastructure, Lightning, side chains, and drive chains, while Tone was already looking past the celebration toward 2X, fungibility, and the next political fight. On BTC-E and Chinese exchanges, both treated custody risk as the real lesson, with Tone more willing than Jimmy to believe BTC-E might return in some limited form.

PessimisticMixedOptimistic
The panel was optimistic about Bitcoin’s technical future after SegWit, but the episode remained wary of 2X, exchange custody, customer funds, and unresolved governance conflict.

What they were watching

Bitcoin was discussed around 4,050 dollars at the open, with Thomas noting it seemed to be falling, and Bitcoin Cash around 618 dollars. Tone later reviewed the chart and stayed bullish for the next few weeks, saying he still expected a move toward the 5,000 barrier if Bitcoin could reclaim the high area. The directional consensus was constructive on Bitcoin but cautious about near-term volatility, with the next hard-fork fight already replacing the SegWit countdown.

SegWit activates

The show opened with Segregated Witness now active on Bitcoin. Jimmy described the upgrade as enabling Lightning, Schnorr signatures, confidential transactions, side chains, and drive chains, but warned that wallets and infrastructure would need time before ordinary users felt the full effect.

Bigger blocks begin through SegWit

Thomas noted that SegWit was already allowing blocks slightly larger than one megabyte on the original Bitcoin network. Jimmy explained that many miners were likely keeping conservative block-size parameters because they did not want to risk invalid blocks, while Bitfury appeared more comfortable mining larger SegWit blocks.

The next fight after SegWit

Tone said he was more relieved than celebratory because the 2X hard fork remained ahead. His focus moved quickly to defending decentralization, preparing for another governance fight, and pushing for fungibility tools like confidential transactions and MimbleWimble.

Drive chains and fungibility

Jimmy named drive chains as the development he was most excited about after SegWit, arguing they could allow experimentation without repeated hard-fork drama. Tone preferred fungibility improvements, and Jimmy explained that MimbleWimble-style work would likely require side chains or similar structures.

BTC-E still claims a return

BTC-E continued to claim it would return despite the arrest of an alleged operator in Greece. Tone said he would take them somewhat at their word because the exchange had operated for years, while Jimmy remained skeptical until a working site actually appeared.

Custody and KYC risk

The BTC-E exit question asked whether returning customers would face KYC and AML requirements. Tone and Jimmy both thought that would be unlikely if the remaining operators were outside Western legal control, while Thomas argued that BTC-E could use KYC as another way to delay or retain withdrawals.

Chinese exchanges invest idle funds

The panel discussed reports that Chinese exchanges were investing idle customer funds while charging no trading fees. Jimmy treated it as a predictable result of trusting exchanges with money, while Tone tied it to the purpose of financial regulation and warned that exchanges could use customer balances for trading against customers.

Bitcans documentary and Chinese Bitcoin

The show closed its issue segments with a documentary on China’s role in Bitcoin, featuring figures such as Jihan Wu, ViaBTC, Huobi, Simon Dixon, Roger Ver, and Bitcans. Jimmy expected a big-block-friendly perspective, while Tone predicted the documentary would avoid explicit Bitcoin Cash advocacy and instead present Chinese mining as heroic Bitcoin infrastructure.

Story of the Week

SegWit activates and the work begins

The dominant story was SegWit finally activating on Bitcoin after years of debate and a live WCN activation special. The panel did not treat activation as a completed revolution, but as a door opening: Lightning, Schnorr signatures, confidential transactions, side chains, drive chains, and fungibility work could now proceed with fewer old constraints. Jimmy repeatedly stressed that infrastructure would take time, while Tone said the next battle had already begun with 2X and future attempts to redirect Bitcoin. The episode’s story was relief without rest.
