84 Charing Cross Road What a delightful and beautiful little book of letters. I picked it up by happenstance while walking through Barnes and Noble. It was on a shelf that said buy one get one 50% off, and it was a next to another small book about the Queen of England reading books from a bookmobile, which I also purchased What a delightful and beautiful book of letters. Helen Hanif begins by writing a letter to a bookshop in London in the 50s, requesting rare, obscure and beautiful out of print books. Frank Dwelle responds to her and they begin a like seems about a 15 year correspondence, her requesting books, sending them beautiful care packages, helping them out during the rations with powdered eggs, real eggs and other food stuff that the Londoners could only dream of. It doesn't seem I won't do any spoilers, just what a beautiful and delightful series of letters that I read in one sitting and I just adored. It was fantastic to spend time with them, and hear them discussing their lives, their books and the small bookshop on Charing Cross Road. New York and London, brought together by beautiful letters. What a wonderful, wonderful book. On the back there's a quote from the San Francisco Examiner. It says, a unique throat lumping sidesplitting treasure. I couldn't agree more. It was just delightful.
