A quick book review, masters of doom, about the creation of doom quake and other amazing software by ID, the story of John Carmack and John Romero, two very different people who formed together the most incredible computer company of my childhood, from wolf 3d to doom to quake. I couldn't believe each incredible download as the game, the same game that we'd been playing, running around arrays killing monsters, got better and better and better through each iteration. It was incredibly fascinating to read the behind the scenes situation, the incredible amount of work and overtime and staying up all night that all the programmers put in, and the incredible conflict between the two main characters, Carmack and Romero. It was especially sad later on to see Carmack and his engine, his software theory, winning, and Romero and his beautiful design losing horribly with die Katana and his terrible office on the top floor of a building that constantly got sun from the beautiful windows, where eventually they had to put in tons of shade for the programmers who hated the beautiful windows, as well as the heating and cooling problems. Just an incredible story behind the scenes software, some of which even involved California, small college near me, and it was just amazing. I wish I could have gotten involved back then. Who knew, if you just showed up and could do something for Doom or id Software? You could have somehow gotten in there, and many did. But of course, it was a wild ride for them too. Just an excellent book about software, reminiscent of Cult of the Dead, cow, which I think I read at the same time, or maybe in the previous year, or check that out too. But yes, masters of doom. Fantastic. Enjoyed it.
