Nostr ("Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays") is the simple decentralized social-media protocol introduced by fiatjaf in November 2020. Nostr uses public-key cryptography for user identity and a network of relays (servers) for message distribution. Unlike federated platforms, Nostr has no protocol-level identity provider — users are identified by their npub (public key).

The protocol gained significant adoption in the Bitcoin community in 2022–2023 (Jack Dorsey funded major early development) and is referenced extensively in The Bitcoin Group and WCN Nostr coverage as the canonical Bitcoin-adjacent social protocol.
